What are LM 79 Test Outcomes?
LM-79 is approved test method for electrical and photometric measurements of Solid State Lighting Products. It describes the procedure in measuring total luminous flux, electrical power, luminous intensity distribution, chromaticity under standard conditions. It covers LED based SSL products with control electronics and heat sink incorporated with AC or DC power supply. This does not include LED chips, LED package or LED module but luminaries (fixtures incorporating light source) as well as integrated LED lamps.
The equipment used in LM-79 is integrated sphere and goniophotometer.
Integrating Sphere Goniophotometer
The test report shall list all significant data for each SSL product tested together with performance data. The outcomes of the LM-79 test are:
- Correction factor applied ( e.g. spectral mismatch, self absorption , intensity distribution etc.)
- Measured total luminous flux( lumen(lm)), input voltage(v), current(a), power(w), Luminous intensity distribution(cd), efficacy(lm/w)
- Color quantities( chromaticity coordinates, CCT, CRI )
- Spectral power distribution
- Bandwidth of spectoradiometer, if spectral distribution and/or color quantities are reported.
- Statement of uncertainties (if required)
- Deviation from standard operating procedures, if any.

Definition of LM-79 Testing:
LM-79 is one approved method that describes procedures & precautions in performing measurement of LED products.
Scope of IES LM-79 testing:
LM-79 Testing is applied to solid-state lighting products that include the following requirements:
- LED based products that are integrated control circuit and heat sinks
- LED based products only requiring AC or DC power supply
And does not cover as bellow:
- LED products requiring external operating circuits or heat sinks (bare LED chips, package and modules)
- Fixtures designed for LED products but sold without a light source
Electrical Requirements:
- SSL products work with AC power: voltage, electrical current, power, frequency, power factor
- SSL products work with DC power: voltage, electrical current, power

- Air Flow—limited/ Limited air flow
- Mounting–limited thermal transfer

- Voltage waveform (harmonic distortion< 3%) / AC wave shape limit to harmonic RMS of 3%

- Before testing, SSL products should work for a certain time to reach up stable working temperature.

Test Method of Lm-79/ LM-79 Test Methods:
Integrating Sphere and Goniophotometer available to achieve the test report
Integrating Sphere: Integrating sphere systems are used to measure the total luminous flux and color for LM-79. This can be performed with a photometer (total luminous flux) or a spectral radiometer (spectral radiant flux). Utilizing a spectral radiometer and integrating sphere is the preferred method, which derives total luminous flux and color qualities form spectral radiant flux measurements. LM-79 Luminaire Testing
LM-79-08. It is the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) approved method for the Electrical and Photometric Measurements of Solid-State Lighting. It measures an LED luminaire or integral lamp as a whole system according to a standard process using specified equipment.
IES LM-79 Electrical and Photometric Measurements of Solid-State Lighting Products
Approved method describing procedures and precautions in performing reproducible measurements of LED Lights:
- Total luminous flux
- Electrical powers
- Luminous Intensity distribution
- Efficacy (lm/watt)
- Chromaticity
LM-79 Luminaire Testing Scope:
Applies to LED-based products incorporating control electronics and heat sinks, that is, those devices that require only AC mains power or a DC voltage power supply to operate.
Absolute Photometry Basis:
- LM-79 requires complete luminaire testing
- Traditionally, photometric evaluation of lighting products is based on separate tests for lamps and luminaires (Relative)
- For SSL products, LED lamps typically cannot be separated from their luminaire because of heat effects (Absolute)
Relative vs. Absolute Photometry:
- Relative testing – Lamps of interest and luminaire (with reference lamp) are measured separately. Then the actual light distribution and intensity of the complete luminaire of interest is derived by normalization of the test data
- Absolute testing – The actual light distribution and intensity of the luminaire of interest is measured directly from the complete luminaire.
