An approved method describing procedures and precautions in performing reproducible measurements of LEDs:

  • Total luminous flux
  • Electrical powers
  • Luminous Intensity distribution
  • Efficacy (lm/watt)
  • Chromaticity

What Is LM-79 Testing?

Everyone knows about it, in 2008, the Illuminating Engineering Society published LM 79, Approved Method for the Electrical and Photometric Measurements of SSL Products. LM-79 testing lab capture performance nature of products that feature SSL, including light emitting diodes LEDs.

 LM 79 Testing Scope

Applies to LED-based products incorporating control electronics and heat sinks, that is, those devices that require only AC mains power or a DC voltage power supply to operate.

Who can perform testing?

LM 79 testing should be performed by ITC India Laboratory for the category of the product tested. Only reports from recognized laboratories are relevant. This standard is used for the Department Of Energy ENERGY STAR program qualification and lighting facts advocate program. All ITCIndia product testing is performed according to LM 79  in a NABL and BIS recognized laboratory and reports are available upon request.

Why We Use LM-79 Testing Lab?

The LM-79 testing lab provides a snapshot of performance under specified operating conditions at some point in the life of a product, usually, at the beginning of the operation, these are referred to as initial measurements. It never addresses permanent ratings, changing performance over time lumen maintenance, or LED case temperature.

The LM 79 methods are really applicable to integrated LED products, such as luminaries and replacement lamps. It is not applicable to LED packages, modules, or arrays

  • LM 79 is the method for testing electrical and photometric measurements of SSL lighting products.
  • LM 79 contains procedures for performing reproducible measurements of LED properties, including total flux, electrical power, efficacy, and chromaticity.
  • The scope of LM 79 Testing Laboratories applied to LED products that incorporate control electronics and heat sinks. This covers complete LED luminaries and integrated LED sources. It does not include bare LED chips or LED-based products without a light source.

Absolute Photometry Basis

  • LM 79 requires complete luminaire testing
  • Traditionally, photometric evaluation of lighting products is based on separate tests for lamps and luminaires relative
  • For solid-state lighting products, LED lamps typically cannot be separated from their luminaire because of heat effects absolute

What Is Important Aspect Of LM-79 Testing?

LM 79 testing requires complete luminaries testing on an absolute photometric basis. Typically lighting products are evaluated on a relative photometric basis, where separate tests are done for lamps luminaries. However, for SSL products the LED lamps typically cannot be separated from their luminaries. The absolute photometric testing required measures the light distribution and light intensity of the complete luminaries.

In recent times, the term LM 79 Testing laboratories have become part of our lighting lexicon and have been treated in some cases as lighting program all its own. While many lighting programs such as DLC and Energy Star reference LM 79 procedures, it is not in and of itself a lighting program with specified requirements and pass/ fails criteria.

However, the term LM 79 Testing Lab has come to generally be recognized as two distinct tests a candela distribution test with an IES file, and an integrating sphere test for a standard color CCT, CRI, Duv, chromaticity coordinates. Nevertheless, any time LM 79 is mentioned in reference to the desired testing, our staff will verify exactly what the customer requires since many measurement options are discussed in the official document.

Relative vs. Absolute Photometry

Relative testing  Lamps of interest and luminaire with reference lamp are measured separately. Then the actual light distribution and intensity of the complete luminaire of interest is derived by normalization of the test data

Absolute testing The actual light distribution and intensity of the luminaire of interest are measured directly from the complete luminaire.

Why Do We Need to LM 79 Test?

LED is becoming so popular that it has replaced all other lightning sources like candescent lamp, CFL. Manufacturer have shifted to produce LED and making profits by selling low quality products in the market. This can deteriorate the LED business. LM 79 helps to access the LED by giving the photometric parameters and electrical parameters.

LM 79 focus on the absolute photometry, so it directly measures the total lumen of the complete lightning system including fixture, driver etc. LM 79 test report gives electrical and photometric parameter.

Photometric parameter: Luminous flux (lm), efficacy (lm/w), Luminous intensity distribution (candela), chromaticity coordinates, correlated color temperature (CCT), color rendering index (CRI)

Electrical parameter: voltage, current, frequency, power, power factor.

LM 79 Data enable objective product comparison and allows for evaluation relative to performance requirement.

What are the limitations of LM-79?

What are the limitations of LM-79?

As we all know about the strength of LM 79. Everything has its pros and cons. Let us have a look on the drawbacks of LM 79.

  • LM 79 depicts the parameters of the individual products. So the obtained Parameters cannot be used to access alike products.
  • Other limitation is the sample size. It does not state any sample size. So, the manufacturer provides only one sample instead of supplying more. This thus increases the vulnerability of lesser quality products.
  • This can be used only to determine complete luminary instead of LED used ( as based on absolute photometry) , which can produce different results due to quality of accessories used like glass, thermal effect, lenses etc.

What is Relative Photometry?

What is relative photometry?

Total Lumen output of a bare lamp is measured in relative photometry   for more clarity; the total luminous flux of the lamp is measured separately without the Fixture. In IES LM-80- 08, IES LM 82-12, the relative photometry is used. The purpose is to find light output, Efficacy, color over temperature for light engines.

Relative photometry can measures:

  • Total luminous flux of the bare lamp
  • Luminous intensity distribution
  • Scale the luminous intensity values by the ratio of the measured lamp lumens to the rated lamp lumens.

Some important features regarding relative photometry:

  1. Relative photometry is performed for luminaries with conventional sources.
  2. Luminaries test is referenced to the luminous Flux measured for bare lamp.
  3. The result produced is in the units of candela per rated lumens( cd/rated lm)
  4. It can also measure the efficiency of luminary.
  5. Normalize ballast factor, Lamp age.
  6. Specific lamp performance doesn’t matter

Relative photometry is not used in SSL with integrated lamps due to many reasons:

  • The LED‘s are difficult to remove from the Luminaries.
  • A large number of LED devices will not work properly without heat sinks provided with luminaries.
  • The thermal environment that the LED devices undergo within the luminary is often radically different from the thermal environment it will practice in its “bare lamp” configuration.

Test method for total luminous flux Measurements:

The total luminous flux of SSL product shall be measured with an Integrating Sphere or Goniophotometer. The method may be chosen depending upon what other measurements quantities (color, intensity distribution) need to be measured., the size of SSL products, and other requirements.

The integrating sphere is suited for total luminous flux and color measurements of integrated LED lamps and relative small size LED luminaries. Advantage of using integrating sphere is that it does not requires the “ Dark Room”., and also it is less time consuming.

The Goniophotometer provides measurements of Luminous Intensity Distribution as well as total luminous flux. It can take measurements of larger size luminaries as well as small size luminaries. It has to be installed in Dark Room. Measurements in goniophotometer are time consuming.

  Integrating Sphere Goniophotometer
Conditions No Dark room Dark Room
Size of SSL Small Size luminaries Large size as well as small size Luminaries
Measurements Total Luminous Flux Light Intensity Distribution , Total Luminous Flux
Duration of Test Fast Measurements Time consuming as compared to Sphere photometer.

How LM-79 testing can help assess LED luminary quality and performance?

We all believe in buying quality products. Discovery of LED is boon to our world. LED has replaced all the traditional lightning systems because of its quality, life and performance.  Manufacturers are switching from manufacturing traditional lightning to produce LED lighting. Many of the manufacturers are making unsubstantial claims regarding colour quality, luminous flux (lm), efficacy (lm/w) and general quality. This can Lead to LED degradation. To ensure quality, a series of test has to be performed on LED luminaries for its long term survival. This is served by LM 79 test method. It is not only the LED but the whole SSL has to qualify all the tests.

For special purpose, it may be useful to determine the characteristics of SSL products when they are operated at other than standard conditions described in the approved method.

Photometric testing includes measurements of total radiant flux, luminous flux, Efficacy (lm/w), chromaticity, correlated color temperature (CCT), and color rendering index (CRI), Light Intensity Distribution (cd). Radiant flux, expressed in watts, is a measurement of the total power of electromagnetic radiation (light) emitted from the luminary or lamp. Luminous flux is a weighted measurement based on human visual perception.

The above measured parameters help to access the LED luminary quality and performance.

ITC india Pvt Ltd is a leading company to test LM 79, company has both the highly accurate equipments “The Integrating Sphere” & “  The Goniophotometer” installed at its premises.

ITC india is a NABL accredited lab having full scope of LM 79( certificate no. T-3510.)
